Every two years, the International Motor Show in Frankfurt brings us a special vehicle from the AC Schnitzer special accessories range. The 2003 Concept Car, the AC Schnitzer V8 TOPSTER, is no exception. BMW Z4 3.0i is the base chosen to this extraordinary work of art and no stone was left unturned in the build process.
The beast under the hood is an upgraded version of BMW M5's 4941 cc eight cylinder, four-valve engine. In cooperation with the BMW works team Schnitzer Freilassing, this engine was developed in record time to be a one-off special. To improve its power output, it was equipped with special intake and exhaust camshafts, fine-machined cylinder heads, raised compression to 11.5 : 1 and reprogrammed control unit. An environmentally-friendly special steel high performance exhaust system with twin chromed racing tailpipe trims in right and left combination was added to further improve the exhaust gas flow. As the engine was required to fit in the engine bay of the Z4 basic vehicle, it was necessary to modify the oil sump and oil pump and improve the air flow with new intake pipes and two air filter boxes.
