October 9 1997 marked the beginning of a revolution for Alfa Romeo. On this day, the first glimpse of the Alfa Romeo 156 was seen in Lisbon, allowing the brand to reclaim its tradition and place in the market of elite sports car manufacturers. This success was followed later with models such as the Alfa Romeo 166, Alfa Romeo 156 Sportwagon, and the more recent Alfa Romeo 147. Most impressive was the 156, a medium-sized, clean and stylish car that held all of Alfa's proud engineering heritage. This model won acclaim from both the press, who voted it Car of the Year 1998, and from 90,000 buyers. The other motor manufacturers had to adjust in order to keep up, introducing versions with common rail turbodiesel engines that had first been seen on the Alfa saloon.
