Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider

The Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider was a two-seater convertible with body by Carrozzeria Touring, and was part of Alfa Romeo's 2600 flagship model range introduced in 1961 and produced until 1968. It was the successor to the Alfa Romeo 2000, and was fitted with a new all-alloy 2.6 liter engine with six cylinders in line and twin overhead camshafts, to replace the earlier 4-cylinder engine with its cast-iron block. Two carburettors were fitted to the engine, which developed 145 bhp, and a total of 2255 Spider models were produced. The 2600 Spider was joined by a light-weight coupe by Carrozzeria Zagato, called 2600 Sprint Zagato or SZ, and a limited-edition six-window sedan by OSI; both of these had three-carburetor engines. Unfortunately, the Alfa Romeo 2600 range found only limited success on the market despite its excellent engine, largely due to it using running gear that was over a decade old at introduction, as well as elevated prices compared with other models. Its shortcomings were clearly demonstrated when the new Alfa Romeo Giulia appeared not long after, demonstrating the advantages of an entirely new running gear. Further emphasizing the deficiencies of the 2600 range was the fact that the tires fitted to the 2600 were only 10 mm wider in section than the tires that fitted to the Alfa Romeo Giulietta, despite the 2600 having considerably more power and weight.
