The Alfa Romeo 75 was introduced in May of 1985 to replace the Alfa Romeo Alfetta and Alfa Romeo Giulietta, celebrating Alfa Romeo's 75th anniversary of production. This car had a striking wedge shape, tapering to the front with square headlights, and a matching grille (similar to the Cressoni-designed Alfa Romeo 33). The Alfa Romeo 75 had some features that made it unique, most notably its near-perfect front to rear balance, which was achieved by fitting the standard five-speed gearbox to the rear differential. The suspension was designed to optimize handling, which consisted of a torsion bar and shock absorber combination at the front and a de-dion assembly with shock absorbers at the rear. The engine was connected to the two-segment driveshaft which ran the length of the car from the engine block to the gearbox, rotating at the same speed as the engine. The shaft segments were elastically connected to prevent vibration and engine/gearbox damage. The engine range of the Alfa Romeo 75 included four-cylinder petrol carbureted engines of 1.6, 1.8, and 2.0 liters, as well as a 2.0 liter intercooled turbo diesel, and a 2.5 liter fuel injected V6. In 1987, a 3.0 liter V6 also joined the lineup. In North America, where the car was known as the Milano, only the 2.5 and 3.0 V6s were available from 1987 to 1989.
