Alfa Romeo Alfetta 2.0

The Alfa Romeo Alfetta was a stylish four-door saloon and an elegant fastback coupé, built by the Italian car manufacturer and sold between 1972 and 1984. It was renowned for its combination of modern design and powerful engines; with over 400,000 units produced during its lifespan, it was one of the most successful models of the brand. However, by the end of its production, sales slumped due to the various reliability issues afflicting Alfa Romeo during this period.

Developed primarily by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the Alfetta introduced a new drivetrain layout for Alfa Romeo: the transmission, the differential, and the clutch were placed at the rear of the car, which allowed for improved weight distribution, similar to the Alfa Romeo Alfetta 158/159 Grand Prix cars. It was equipped with double wishbones and torsion bars at the front, and a de Dion Beam at the rear. A further facelift was applied in 1979 to update the looks of the car, and it also came with the options of a new turbo Diesel engine, and a fuel-injected 2.0 DOHC variant.

In total, three different engine options were available: a 1.6 and 1.8 L four-cylinder DOHC, and a 2.0 L turbo Diesel supplied by VM Motori. The Diesel was increased to 2.4 L in 1982. In 1984, the company decided to rename the model as the Alfa Romeo 90, as it fit better with the company's new naming system that included the Alfa Romeo 33 and Alfa Romeo 75.

The Alfetta also became famous in 1978 when it was used by Italian Prime Minister Aldo Moro as his official car, when he was kidnapped and later killed by the Red Brigades terrorist organization. The high profile of the events earned it a significant place in popular culture, with several films (including the prestigious The Advocate) heavily featuring Alfettas of various designs.

The Alfa Romeo Alfetta GTV was a fastback coupé based on the saloon model.
