Alfa Romeo Disco Volante Touring Concept

The Touring Superleggera presented the Alfa Romeo Disco Volante 2012 at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show in the form of a full-scale style model. This stunning two-seater coupe, equipped with a front-central engine and transaxle drivetrain, will be produced as a limited edition for collectors, design aficionados and sports drivers. In 1952, Carrozzeria Touring received the brief to create a shape that was 'insensitive to wind'. This inspired the unique oval-cross section design which would later be trademarked. To bring this vision to life, Alfa Romeo combined the core elements of a 1900 Alfa Romeo C and reconfigured an aluminium crankcase, tubular chassis and lightweight, efficient aluminium body. Originally designed as a Sport category racer, the C52 Disco Volante soon became an iconic design that influenced future automotive ideas. As an embodiment of Touring's founder Felice Bianchi Anderloni's thought: "Il peso è il nemico, la resistenza dell'aria è l'ostacolo" (weight is the enemy, air resistance the obstacle), the Disco Volante represents the best of classic Italian craftsmanship. To celebrate its 100th anniversary, Alfa Romeo even created a bronze sculpture of the model which is now exhibited in Milan.
