Alfa Romeo P2

The Alfa Romeo P2 was a successful car when it made its debut in 1924. Taking victory in two of the four Automobile World Championship rounds that year, Antonio Ascari drove it in the European Grand Prix at Spa and Gastone Brilli-Peri won the Italian Grand Prix at Monza after Ascari died while leading the intervening race at Montlhery. From 1924-1930, the Alfa Romeo P2 went on to obtain fourteen victories in Grands Prix and major events, such as the Targa Florio, putting it amongst other iconic Grand Prix cars of the 1920s, including the Bugatti Type 35. This success enabled Alfa Romeo, as reigning world champions, to incorporate the laurel wreath into their logo. The car was powered by Alfa's first straight-8 cylinder supercharged engine with two carburettors placed after the compressor. At the Circuit of Cremona in Italy, it achieved a record-breaking speed of 158 km/h (98 mph) when driven by Ascari and 195 km/h (121 mph) during a speed trial. Only two of the six original models survive and are now on display in the Alfa Romeo Museum in Arese and the Turin Automobile Museum. The P2 was available in two body styles with either a cut off or long rear.
