Alpina BMW B6 Bi-Turbo Coupe
For Alpina, a technology driven company, progress never stops. Following the introduction of the
B7 Bi-Turbo, their engineers from Buchloe, Germany have been continuously perfecting the turbo charging and intercooler system. The advanced all-aluminium V8 now produces 540hp (397kW) at a moderate 5500rpm and an impressive 700Nm of torque from 3000rpm. Two turbo-chargers in parallel, with custom developed large exhaust-turbines, enable this engine to deliver both great power output and immense torque over an extended rpm range, with excellent throttle response at low rpm.
A comprehensive superior cooling system was also incorporated into the design of the B6 Bi-Turbo. This includes an indirect inter-cooler system (air-to-water/water-to-air) with short intake tracts as well as increased inter-cooler flow, a large-volume low-temperature inter-cooler radiator, two water-to-air intercoolers proximate to the engine, and additional separate motor oil and water coolers.
High-performance MAHLE pistons, built especially to handle the temperatures and pressures associated with up to 1.0 bar boosting, along with the engine's 9.2:1 nominal compression ration, result in a impressive specific output of 122.7hp (90kW) per litre and a mean total compression of 20.1 bar.
