Audi 100

The C2 Audi 100 was launched in 1976, boasting a new, fresh style and an innovative five-cylinder engine - the first of its kind with a gasoline engine (Mercedes-Benz was the first to introduce a three-litre diesel, 5cyl engine in their C111 back in 1974). It initially boasted 100bhp (74 kW), offering ”5 cylinder power and 4 cylinder economy”, but it later grew to 136 bhp (100 kW). The Coupé was discontinued but a five-door hatchback, the 100 Avant, was presented with this generation alongside the two- and four-door models. As it was sold as the Audi 5000 in the United States, it allowed Audi to reach a much wider audience by spreading the development costs to a global scale - and it proved to be a great success. In 1980 the Adui 200 was introduced, a premium, turbocharged model of 170 bhp available in 200 5E or 200 5T spec for the UK. This luxurious model featured heated seats, opening front quarter windows, cruise control, ski bag, green heat insulated glass, electric sunroof and electrical heated mirrors - available with a standard 3-speed auto or, as an option, a 5-speed manual transmission. This version was also sold as the 5000 Turbo in the US. The Audi 100/200 was replaced in 1983 by the C3 platform models, with the 200 following a year later.
