A heavily revised version, the C4, of the C3 was launched in 1991. Despite this extensive update, the V8 variant of the C3 platform was still being sold as a distinct line. The major change was the debut of a 2.8l V6 engine, followed shortly by a 2.6l variation. These were essentially the same V6 engines found in the 1992 Audi 80. Quattro all wheel drive was available as an option across the entire range, allowing buyers to get the Audi 100 quattro featuring a ZF 4-speed automatic transmission. For 1995, Audi replaced the 100 nameplate with A6. Moreover, the S4 model, which had been previously sold, was rebranded as the S6. The two models then solely operated independently after the A4 was released in 1994, replacing the 80. Eventually, the V8 was replaced by the A8 in 1994.
