Audi A2
The Audi A2 is a premium supremini produced by Audi from 1999 to 2005, with the final cars leaving the Neckarsulm plant in July 2005.
Design and construction of the A2 is pioneering, featuring an avant-garde style combined with a space frame design of the outer panels. This provides significant weight advantage and usually results in fuel efficiency of over 2 l/100 km (128 mpg, imperial gallon) - it even won the Nordic Countries EcoRun economical driving race in 2005 with consumption of only 2.62 l/100 km. Despite its technological achievements, the A2 has not been popular with customers. This, coupled with Audi's lack of marketing for the A2, has resulted in the estimated production of 175000 units - significantly lower than the rival Mercedes-Benz' A-Class sales of 1 million. The A2's space frame design incorporates "knots" instead of welding, allowing for improved shell stability, durability, and weight, while also allowing the car to house a more spacious interior. However, the cost of production with aluminium and the small production runs has driven the A2's price higher than its comparable competitors.
