Audi A2

The Audi A2 was a premium supremini produced by Audi from 1999 to 2005. It was the last car to leave the Neckarsulm plant in July 2005. Despite the avant-garde styling of the A2 and being ahead of its time in design terms, it was reported that Audi was disappointed with the level of sales, the estimated final production being 175,000 units. This is in stark contrast to the 1 million units sold of the rival Mercedes-Benz A-Class. Design and Construction The A2 was built with an aluminium alloy body frame, resulting in a significant weight to competitor vehicles with traditional structures. Under certain conditions, the A2 is capable of reaching a fuel consumption of only 2 l/100 km (128 mpg, imperial gallon). In 2005, the A2 won the EcoRun economical driving race in Nordic Countries with a consumption of 2.62 l/100 km and the normal petrol engine versions capable of 5 l/100 km. The space frame design meant the outer body panels had no structural function – similar to that of the original Renault Espace – and the “space frame” bore the stress put on the car. This gave improvements in shell stability, shell durability, lower weight, and better interior space. Unfortunately, the cost of working with aluminium, along with its small production runs, made the A2 much more expensive than its competitors, which, coupled with a lack of marketing from Audi, negatively impacted its sales.
