Audi A2 2002 posters

Audi A2

The Audi A2 is a premium subcompact automobile produced by Audi from 1999 to 2005. The last units left the Neckarsulm plant in July 2005.

Design and construction

The A2 was considered to be technologically and stylistically advanced, however this has not helped boosts its sales significantly. Audi was reportedly unhappy with the level of sales. It is estimated that the final production was only 175,000 lower than the one million units achieved by the rival Mercedes-Benz A-Class.

The A2's body shell is composed of a large portion of aluminium alloy, which gives the vehicle a much lower weight when compared to traditional chassis. This allows the car to reach exceptional fuel efficiency of 2 l/100 km (128 mpg, imperial gallon). In the 2005 Nordic Countries EcoRun economical driving race, the Audi A2 came first achieving consumption of only 2.62 l/100 km. Even some standard petrol powered models are able to reach 5 l/100 km.

The A2's frame is created with interconnected "knots" rather than welding, making it stronger, more resistant and lighter, while also freeing more space in the interior. However, the cost of building an A2 with aluminium was higher than its competitors, which this, in combination with the lack of marketing, hindered sales.
