Audi A3 3-door
In 1996, Audi made its return to the lower market segments with the release of the A3 (also known as the Typ 8L). This model was based on the Volkswagen Golf's platform but had a sportier image than the Golf. It featured a three-door hatchback body, as well as front and four-wheel drive. All engine configurations contained four cylinders and were slanted in order to fit the transverse drivetrain. After the A4, the Audi A3 became the next Audi model to utilize five valves per cylinder.
In 1999, the A3 range was expanded with the introduction of the entry level 1.6 litre engine, 1.8 turbo engine with 180 PS (132 kW), and a 1.9 TDI with the pumpe-düse and variable geometry turbo technology. The 1.8T Quattro was given either of the two power ratings--150 hp (110 kW) and 180 PS (132 kW)--and the same Haldex-based all-wheel drive system used in the S3 and the first Audi TT. This year, Audi also catered to popular demand and released a five-door body, even though they had originally intended to just produce three-door cars.
In 2001, the model went through improvements with new light clusters, an upgraded interior, and a new six-speed manual gearbox for the 180 PS 1.8 Turbo and the 130 PS (96 kW) 1.9 TDI. Standard equipment on the A3 also included Audi's ESP (Electronic Stability Program) traction-control and brake-force distribution computer.
The first-generation A3 was replaced in Europe in 2003, though it still remains on the market in developing countries, with Brazil being a notable example.
