Audi A3 3-door

The Audi A3 3-door was initially released to the European market in 1996 and made its return to Audi's production of small cars. With its close similarity to the Volkswagen Golf Mk4, the A3 is built on the "PQ34" or "A4" platform and features four-cylinder engines that are transversely mounted. It was initially available only as a three-door hatchback with either front or four-wheel drive and came with five valves per cylinder following the release of the Audi A4. The United Kingdom market was the first to have the Audi A3 in November 1996 and in 1999, more powerful versions were introduced such as the 1.8 Turbo and a 1.9 TDI diesel engine. A five-door body was also put out the same year. In 2000, Audi made some minor cosmetic and interior changes to the A3, including a new set of headlights and rear lamps, as well as an improved six-speed manual gearbox for the 180 PS engine and the newly released 130 PS 1.9 TDI. Audi's electronic stability control, traction-control, and brake force distribution computer became standard kit as well. Safety Euro NCAP rated the Audi A3 3-door four out of five stars, with their evaluation concluding that the column lock, adjuster lever, and bracket present hazards in the knee impact area for the driver. The A3 also offers almost no protection to pedestrians, being given two stars out of a possible four. Production of the first-generation model stopped in Brazil in 2006, although it continued to be sold in some markets even after its 2003 replacement in Europe.
