Lightweight construction is essential to achieving the A3 Sportback's performance and efficiency targets. Ultra lightweight technology enables the new Audi A3 Sportback to have a weight close to 90 kilograms (198.42 lb) lighter than the previous version. It's powered by a 1.4 TFSI engine, giving it a curb weight (without the driver) of only 1,205 kilograms (2,656.57 lb). This has been achieved by using hot-formed steels in the car's occupant cell. This has resulted in an overall weight which is 37 kilograms (81.57 lb) lighter than before. Further weight savings have been reached in the interior and engine components. Audi, leader in the lightweight construction industry, has once again set a new record with the A3 Sportback.
The design of the A3 Sportback combines a longer body with a longer wheelbase of 2,636 millimeters (8.65 ft) and an additional 58 millimeters (2.28 in) from the previous version. Despite only slight increases in its length (4,310 millimeters [14.14 ft]), width (1,780 millimeters [5.84 ft]) and height (1,425 millimeters [4.68 ft]), it brings a whole new level of style to the market.
