Audi A3 Sportback S-line
At the 2003 Geneva Motor Show, Audi introduced the second-generation of the A3, the Typ 8P. Offered as a three-door hatchback with four cylinder engines, it boasted a modified mechanical platform, a roomier interior, new petrol engines utilizing Fuel Stratified Injection and a standard six-speed gearbox (apart from the base 1.6).
Mid-2003 saw the launch of two sports variants featuring a 2.0 Turbo FSI with 200PS (147 kW) and the 3.2 VR6 engine for the first time, offering 250 PS (184 kW). Quattro all-wheel drive and the S-Tronic semi-automatic transmission were made available as options (the quattro was standard on the V6) for all models of 140 PS and over.
In June 2004, Audi released a 5-door body called the Sportback, 8 cm (3 in) bigger than the previous 3-door model, with improved rear seat space and a capacious 370 litre cargo area. The new A3 Sportback was also furnished with the revamped grille unveiled with the A8 W12.
In 2005, S-Line trim level showcasing sporty details was introduced for some models. In addition, the 3-door body was fitted with the same front-end as the new Sportback. That same year, the A3 marked its entrance onto the American market as a Sportback body only, with the initial 2.0 TFSI model releasing in 2005, and the 3.2 V6 quattro debuting in 2006. April 2006 was marked by the addition of a powerful 2.0 TDI boasting 170 PS (125 kW).
In August 2006, Audi announced the arrival of the S3 edition, taking its place at the top of the range. The 2.0 TFSI engine was boosted to 265 PS (195 kW) with a maximum turbo pressure of 2.2 bar, and came with a standard 6-speed manual and Quattro. The second-gen S3 was capable of reaching 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.7 seconds. The shocks were adjusted to be stiffer and the height lowered by 25 mm (1 inch) - 225/40 R18 tyres became the new standard.
