Audi A4 Avant
The Audi A4 Avant is a mid-size luxury car, introduced by Audi in October 2000. This new model is based on the Volkswagen Group B6 (PL46) platform, featuring new styling developed by Peter Schreyer, with inspiration from the Bauhaus design language of the C5 Audi A6.
The 1.6 litre engine remained unchanged in the base model, while many other petrol/gasoline engines experienced upgrades in power or displacement. The 1.8 litre 20-valve Turbo was now available in two additional versions, with the most powerful capable of 220 PS (162 kW; 217 bhp) and 300 newton metres (221 lb·ft) of torque. The 1.9 Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) engine was offered with up to 130 PS (96 kW; 128 bhp), and quattro permanent four-wheel drive was available. The 2.0 litre, and all-aluminium alloy 3.0 litre engines also took the place of the 1.6 litre inline-four and 2.8 litre V6, respectively.
The Avant was introduced in June 2001 and arrived in European showrooms in September 2001. In 2002, Audi further increased the power in the 1.8 Turbo engines, and the 2.5 TDI was available with up to 180 PS (132 kW; 178 bhp). Audi reintroduced the S4 in 2003, featuring a 4.2 L V8 engine capable of 344 PS (253 kW; 339 bhp), as well as a A4 Cabriolet convertible with a electro-hydraulic roof. From 2004, Audi offered a continuously variable transmission developed by LuK, known as 'multitronic', to replace the dated conventional automatic transmission on front-wheel drive models.
The boot was redesigned to feature smoother fold lines, with the rear light assemblies forming part of the upper edge. A sport package named 'Ultra Sport' featuring aluminium interior trim, door sills, an 'S line' steering wheel, front and rear spoilers, side skirts, and quattro GmbH designed 18-inch RS4 alloy wheels was also available for the North American market.
