Audi A4 Avant

Audi released the A4 Avant on the Volkswagen B5 platform in 1995, alongside the fifth generation Volkswagen Passat. Both models had front wheel drive and a longitudinal engine, although most Audi A4s are sold with the Quattro all wheel drive system. The Avant station wagon was introduced the following year. European markets had a variety of engine choices ranging from 1.6L to 2.8L, with 1.9L Diesel options utilizing the "pumpe-düse" technology, providing impressive power of up to 110 PS (81 kW). Unfortunately, North American customers would not have the same variety of choices until 1997, as their only option was the 2.8L V6 previously used in the 80/90. In 1995, Audi also featured a 1.8L engine with five valves per cylinder, taken from their Supertouring race car. This engine had a turbocharged version which gave an output of 150 PS (110 kW) and 210 Nm (155 ft.lbf) of torque. The engine also made its way to the V6 family in 1996, with a 2.8L V6 30V giving 193 PS (142 kW). The B5 platform was also the first to feature Audi's Tiptronic transmission, based on the unit previously used by Porsche in their 964-generation 911. This unique "manumatic" transmission allowed drivers to choose between automatic and clutchless manual gears. The B5 A4 was pivotal in the luxury car segment. It proved that Audi could match and even exceed the quality and engineering of competitors like BMW and Mercedes. This, paired with the TT concept that soon became a production car, made Audi an iconic leader in the luxury car market. In 1998, Audi presented its B5 facelift version at the Frankfurt Motor Show. It included the introduction of a 2.4L 30-valve V6 (replacing the 2.6 V6), a 2.5L V6 TDI engine with 150 PS (110 kW) and a 6-speed gearbox, and the high-performance S4, now part of the A4 lineup. Other aesthetic changes included updated taillights, headlights, door handles, etc. In addition, the 1.8T engine available outside Europe had its power output raised to 170 PS (125 kW) in 1998. In 1999, Audi introduced the RS4, as an even higher performance version of the A4.
