Audi A4 Avant

The Audi A4 Avant was introduced on 10 October 2000 and has been in production since June 2001. It was the latest model in the A4 range, based on the Volkswagen Group B6 (PL46) platform, and follows the Bauhaus design language of the C5 (second-generation) Audi A6 introduced in 1997. The Avant was available with a variety of petrol/gasoline and diesel engines, ranging from a 1.6 litre base model to the all-aluminium alloy 3.0 litre V6 220 PS version. The 1.8 litre 20-valve Turbo was offered in three versions (110 kW, 148 bhp; 132 kW, 178 bhp; and 150 PS, 110 kW and 148 bhp). The 1.9 Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) engine came with quattro permanent four-wheel drive, while the 2.5 V6 TDI came with 180 PS (132 kW; 178 bhp) and quattro as standard. A Bosch ESP 5.7 Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) system, Anti-lock braking system (ABS), brake assist, and electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD) were all standard across the range. Other features included a multitronic continuously variable transmission (CVT) developed by LuK, as well as a Fuel Stratified Injection (FSI) system. In 2002 Audi increased the power of the 1.8 Turbo engines to 163 PS ( 120 kW; 161 bhp) and to 190 PS (140 kW; 187 bhp). A year later, Audi reintroduced the S4, now powered by a 344 PS (253 kW; 339 bhp) 4.2 L V8 engine, as well as an A4 Cabriolet variant (Typ 8H). The CVT transmission box was however prone to electronic glitches, as well as mechanical problems. In terms of design, the boot removed the extension of the top edge with a smoother fold line, while the rear light assemblies now form part of the top line. For customers wanting a sportier look, Audi offered the 'Ultra Sport' package, which included aluminium interior trim and door sills, "S line" steering wheel, front and rear spoilers, side skirts, and quattro GmbH designed 18-inch alloy roadwheels.
