Audi A4 Cabriolet 3.0

The newest A4, designated as Typ 8E, made its debut on 10 October 2000. It was built on the Volkswagen Group B6 (PL46) platform and its design was the result of the collaboration between Peter Schreyer and C5 (second-generation) Audi A6 during 1996-1998. The base powerplant, the 1.6litre remained the same but the other petrol engines were improved through displacement increases and/or power upgrades. With the 1.8 litre 20-Valve turbo engine, one could take their pick between 150 PS (110 kW; 148 bhp) or 180 PS (132 kW; 178 bhp), both mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. As for the single cylinder and V6, these were swapped for 2.0 litre and 3.0 litre all-aluminium alloy units. Out of these, the highest powered one could generate 220 PS (162 kW; 217 bhp) and 300 newton metres (221 lb·ft) of torque. The 1.9 Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) engine was also upgraded to 130 PS (96 kW; 128 bhp) and could be paired with quattro permanent four-wheel drive. Finally, the 2.5 V6 TDI featured 180 PS (132 kW; 178 bhp) along with the quattro system. The standard 50:50 torque distribution front to rear and the Bosch ESP 5.7 Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), which featured anti-lock braking system (ABS), brake assist, and electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), were available across the range. The Avant was launched in June 2001 and hit the European stores in September that year. In 2002, Audi increased the power of 1.8 Turbo engines to 163 PS (120 kW; 161 bhp) and 190 PS (140 kW; 187 bhp) (the latter with a red 'T' on the boot lid). Apart from this, one could also get a 2.0 engine with Fuel Stratified Injection (FSI) and a 2.5 TDI with 163 PS (120 kW; 161 bhp). The S4, on one hand, was reintroduced with a 344 PS (253 kW; 339 bhp) 4.2 L V8 engine and on the other, an A4 Cabriolet convertible, which was finally replacing the 80-based Audi Cabriolet, was released. It had an electro-hydraulic operated roof which could be deployed in under 30 seconds and came with body-coloured lower bumper and sill panels. Audi also included a continuously variable transmission developed by LuK, which was christened as the Multitronic. It replaced the old and conventional automatic transmission on front-wheel drive models and was considerably praised by the automotive press. From Audi A6, Audi modified the boot so as to remove the extension of the top edge with a smoother fold line. This styling cue was later adopted by several European and Asian manufacturers. 'Ultra Sport' was the sport package launched in the North American market shortly before B6 was replaced by B7. It included aluminium interior trim and door sills, S line steering wheel, front and rear spoilers, side skirts, and quattro GmbH designed 18-inch RS4 alloy roadwheels.
