Audi A6 Avant

In February 1997, Audi unveiled the A6 (Typ 4B), based on the Volkswagen Group C5 platform. Featuring a new range of internal combustion engines and a sleek, fastback design, the A6 became viewed in a higher-end light, compared to models like the BMW 5-Series and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. With a coefficient of drag of 0.28, the A6 was put on Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best list twice, in 2000 and 2001. The saloon version was released in Europe in mid-1997, and in North America and Australia in late 1997, with the Avant following a year later. Due to necessary compliance with FMVSS in North America, the A6 models were equipped with bumpers that protruded further and with enhanced bracket and suspension assemblies. As per Canadian law, Canadian models were also given daytime running lights as part of the standard feature. The North American versions were available with the 2.8-litre, 30-valve V6 engine, the 2.7-litre biturbo V6 and the 4.2-litre 40-valve V8 petrol engine, all equipped with Quattro permanently four-wheel drive. The V8 models featured broader wheel arches, a revised headlamp and grille design, larger wheels, larger brakes, and the Torsen-based Quattro permanent four-wheel drive.
