Audi A6 1999 posters

Audi A6 4.2 quattro

In February 1997, Audi unveiled the A6 (Type 4B), which used a new vehicle platform from the Volkswagen Group – the C5 platform – and a range of internal combustion engines. At the 1997 Geneva Motor Show, the A6 was presented to the masses. When compared to earlier models, this A6 had a much better build quality and was pitted against luxury offerings from BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Its aerodynamic body shell with a drag coefficient of 0.28 gave the large saloon an eye-catching fastback design that set the trend for Audi’s future models. This A6 proved to be a big hit and was honored with a spot on Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best List in 2000 and 2001. It came with a great selection of engines and variants. Its 30-valve 2.4- and 2.8-litre V6 motors formed the mainstay of the engine lineup, and several other powertrain options were offered all around the world. The A6 was offered with a manual transmission as well as a five-speed tiptronic automatic. In Europe, the C5 saloon variant was released in mid-1997, while in North America and Australia it arrived by the end of the year. There was no Avant (Audi’s term for an estate/wagon) in 1998 in Canada as the C4 Avant was discontinued after the model year 1997, and the C5 was introduced in North America at the same time. FMVSS compliance necessitated certain changes to the US and Canadian models. Bumpers that stuck out further as compared to their European counterparts, modified suspension assemblies on the bumpers, and child-seat tethers were some of the added items. Canadian models also had daytime running lights as standard. For North American C5 A6 models, the 2.8-litre, 30-valve V6 engine, the 250 PS 2.7-litre "biturbo" V6 (also found in the B5 platform S4), and the 300 PS 4.2-litre 40-valve V8 petrol engine, were all made available, with the last two engines only offered with quattro all-wheel drive. The V8 cars had more flared wheel-arches, revised headlamps and grille design (later introduced on all other A6 models in 2002), larger 8Jx17-inch road-wheels, larger brakes, and the Torsen-based all-wheel drive as the default drivetrain.
