Audi A6 Avant

In 1997, the Audi A6 (Typ 4B) made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show. This new model featured a design based on Volkswagen Group's C5 platform, offering drivers a greater range of internal combustion engines and a modern, aerodynamic body with a low coefficient of drag of 0.28. Impressively, the A6 was included on Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best List in 2000 and 2001. Available with a manual transmission or a five-speed tiptronic automatic transmission, the C5 A6 was offered in saloon and Avant body styles across Europe, North America and Australia. In Canada, the Avant was available exclusively from 1998 following the conclusion of 1997 C4 Avant production. To comply with FMVSS, Canadian models were equipped with extra-large bumpers, child-seat tethers, and daytime running lights. In North America, the A6 came equipped with one of three engines; either the V8 4.2-litre 40-valve engine (300 PS (220 kW; 300 hp)), the 2.7-litre "biturbo" V6 (also found in the B5 platform S4, 250 PS (180 kW; 250 hp)), or the 2.8-litre, 30-valve V6 engine. Moreover, all V8 models featured Torsen-based quattro permanent four-wheel drive and sported significantly altered exterior body panels that included flared wheel arches, revised headlamps and grilles, 8Jx17-inch roadwheels, and larger brakes.
