Audi A8

The Audi A8 is a full-size luxury car manufactured by the German automaker Audi to replace the V8 as its top-tier model. The flagship offering of Audi can compete with the likes of Volkswagen Phaeton, long wheelbase Jaguar XJ8, Lexus LS 430 and its primary rivals, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7 Series. Since its launch in 1994, the A8 has carved a successful niche in the market as an ideal alternative. Most versions of the Audi A8 are equipped with Quattro all-wheel-drive system and multitronic or tiptronic automatic transmission as standard. First generation (1994-2003) The first generation of Audi A8 used an all-aluminum space frame (called D2 platform) for construction, which helped to significantly reduce weight of the car. The vehicle earned its fame as the world's first car with a complete aluminum platform. Audi expanded the safety features for the A8 in 1997 to include 6 interior airbags, making it one of the first car to be so equipped. In 2001, Audi introduced the W12 engine, a 6.0-liter unit made by mating two 3.0-liter VR6 end-to-end. The engine was only made available on the European and Asian A8s, exclusively in the long wheelbase versions. Between 2001 and 2003, Audi had produced only 750 W12 models.
