Audi A8 L 4.2

Building on the advanced Volkswagen Group D3 platform, the second-generation Audi A8 (Typ 4E) was revealed in July 2002 and debuted a few months later in Europe and in June 2003 in the United States. This model provided comfortable seating for four to five adults, based on the rear seat configuration. The D3 development program began in 1996, followed by the sketch proposals created by the Ingolstadt-based Audi design studio. The process eventually led to six full-size clay models and further studies in one-quarter scale. After extensive refinement, just two models were chosen to move forward, with the design finalized at the end of 1999. Due to the body being made from aluminium, the process was longer than for steel models like the A4 (B6). In parallel, the interior design of the A8 was developed by a team headed by Jurgen Albamonte. The focus was on grouping major controls near the driver to create a more driver-centric experience, combined with a spacious feel in the cabin. The Multi Media Interface (MMI) and the class-leading colour and trim designs of Barbara Krömeke and Melinda Jenkins were also key elements of the A8's innovative design.
