Audi A8 L W12

The Audi A8 L W12 (Typ 4E) was first revealed to the public in July 2002 and officially introduced to Europe in November 2002 and to the USA (as model year 2004) in June 2003. It was based on the Volkswagen Group D3 platform and was the second-generation of the model. It featured room for four or five adults, depending on rear seat configuration. The design process started in Ingolstadt in 1997. The Audi design studio created multiple sketch proposals, from which six were developed into full-size clay models and later refined into two models. The exterior design was finished in late 1999 and the interior design was progressed with four full size models. Important factors, such as the Multi Media Interface (MMI) designed by Jurgen Schröder, drove the development of the interior design led by Jurgen Albamonte. In terms of materials used, the Audi A8 L W12 utilised aluminium, making the body more capable of sharp feature lines. The end goal of the design team was to create a more driver-focused identity and an airy and spacious cabin whilst grouping major controls closer to the driver. Accomplishing this was helped by the use of class-leading colour and trim from Barbara Krömeke and Melinda Jenkins.
