The Audi RS5 TDI Concept technology study is packed with innovation, featuring an enhanced-output V6 3.0 TDI biturbo boosted by an electrically driven turbocharger. This new development is designed to make the diesel engine sportier and more efficient. The dynamic V6 biturbo in the Audi RS5 TDI Concept produces an impressive 283 kW (385 hp) and, from 1,250 to 2,000 rpm, 750 Nm (553.2 lb-ft) of torque is transmitted to the crankshaft. The red-line is at 5,500 rpm. The supplemental electric turbocharger provides for a extra power boost when accelerating from a standstill. An electric motor, as opposed to the turbine wheel, accelerates the compressor wheel to over 70,000 rpm in a fraction of a second. The exhaust turbochargers can create as much as 2.4 bar of relative boost pressure.
Consequently, the Audi RS5 TDI Concept can hit 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) sprint in a mere four seconds. The 200 km/h (124.3 mph) mark is reached in less than 16 seconds, and the top speed settles at 280 km/h (174.0 mph). Furthermore, the average fuel consumption of less than 5.3 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers (less than 140 grams CO2 per kilometer) (44.4 US mpg/225.3 g/mi) reflects its excellent efficiency.
The electric turbocharger uses recovered energy as its main power source. To convey this energy, the RS5 TDI Concept utilizes a dedicated 48-volt electrical system connected to the standard 12-volt electrical system with a DC/DC converter. The energy is stored in a ultra-compact lithium-ion battery. 48-volt systems are integral to increasing the capacity to transfer greater amounts of energy and play a vital part in Audi's electrification strategy.
