The first generation S3 was built on the same A platform as the Audi A3, Volkswagen Golf, Audi TT, SEAT León and Škoda Octavia. It sports a straight-4 20V 1.8 L turbocharged petrol engine with two versions of power output: 210 bhp and 225 bhp. Early models (1999-2002) had a 210 bhp engine, said to be a de-tuned Audi TT engine, designed to reduce brand competition with the more powerful TT. Later versions (2002-2003) featured variable valve timing and 225 bhp. The engine has a maximum output of 280 N•m of torque, most of which is available from 2200 to 5500 rpm. As a result, this was the first time an Audi S-series car was powered by a small four-cylinder engine.
The S3 has a unique four-wheel drive system, dubbed Quattro, with its Haldex coupling adjusting the bias from the front to rear axle to compensate for changes in grip. Despite this, the S3 is still a front-wheel drive vehicle. With its compact dimensions and array of seat and steering wheel adjustments, the Audi S3 has handling properties similar to any other hot hatch.
The S3 was available in the United Kingdom, Europe and Australia, but never officially released on the United States market. In 2001, the S3 underwent a facelift, wherein it recieved one-piece headlights/indicator units, new front wings, rear light clusters and a few minor interior improvements. These included a digital clock and audio packages.

Optional packages include a Bose sound system, boot/trunk mounted 6 disc CD changer, metallic paint, 18 inch 9-spoke RSTT wheels, glass sunroof, centre arm rest, auto dipping rearview mirror, parking assist, luggage net, heated front seats, cruise control, aluminium door mirror casings and part leather/Alcantara (blue/silver/yellow) combination seat coverings.
