Audi S6 Avant 1996 posters

Audi S6 Avant

The Audi S6 V8 was the perfect base for creating a new model with improved power and driving dynamics. In 1996, quattro GmbH (now Audi Sport GmbH) took over its production, focusing on crafting the performance variant, dubbed 'Q1'. Audi's engine development unit in Neckarsulm was responsible for developing a more powerful 4.2-liter V8 than the one used in the Audi S6, increasing its power from 290 to 326 PS. To improve driving dynamics, the car was equipped with larger front brakes, a six-speed transmission with shorter ratios from third gear upwards, and stiffer suspension. Both axles were fitted with 17-inch rims and 255 tires. The interior sported a predominately black design, with quattro GmbH adding accents of blue, gray or white to the gear knob and speedometer dials - even featuring a scale up to 300 km/h (186 mph). The S6 plus was officially unveiled at the 1996 Geneva International Motor Show, and over the course of 15 months, a total of 855 Avant and 97 Sedan units were built. This marks the first in the series of high-performance offerings from Audi, and is everybody's ancestor.
