In late 1997, Audi released an all-new range of A6 models based on the Volkswagen Group C5 platform, amongst them the Audi S6 quattro. The S6 was available in a four-door saloon/sedan and a five-door estate/wagon (known as Avant). In North America, the Avant was the only version available. This car offered impressive dynamic performance, with a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) acceleration time of 5.7 seconds and a 0-124 mph (200 km/h) time of 21.7 seconds, limited to a top speed of 155.3 mph (250 km/h). The S6 production ended in 2003. C5 powertrain The engine fitted to the S6 was a rubber-hydro mounted all-aluminium alloy 4.2 litre 40-valve V8 (parts code: 077, identification codes: AQJ [Sept 99-May 1], ANK [Sept 00-onwards]). The engine was rated at 340 PS (250 kW; 335 bhp) with 420 Nm (310 lbf·ft) of torque and met the European Union EU3 emissions standard. Its operation was monitored by a Bosch Motronic ME 7.1.1 ECU, with manifold-sited sequential fuel injection, direct ignition, four lambda sensors and two catalytic converters. Heat dissipation was handled by two electric cooling fans, in place of the single viscous fan found on earlier models.
