Audi S8

In 2001, Audi debuted the S8, an upgrade of the standard A8 model. Engine-wise, the S8 had a re-tuned version of the V8 that pumped out 360 PS (265 kW) of power, and the European-spec models had the option of a 6-speed manual transmission. This first-generation Audi S8 ended production in 2003 and was replaced by the second-generation D3 platform A8. The second-generation Audi S8, which was released in late 2005, brought about much attention due to its engine of origin – a 450 PS (331 kW) V10 engine based on the 5.0 L V10 used by Lamborghini Gallardo. This raised questions as to why Audi would go for this engine as it had an identical power output to the W12 engine. However, Audi claims that the V10 gave the car a better weight distribution and a lower overall curb weight, and automotive magazines generally agreed. According to Audi's factory performance claims, the V10 S8 is capable of 0-100 km/h in a mere 5.1 seconds, making it competitive with brands like Mercedes-Benz and BMW. The S8 also gained some fame after appearing in the movie Ronin, starring Robert De Niro, and its combination of size and speed created an unforgettable plot element for the film.
