Audi S8 1999 posters

Audi S8

The Audi S8 was first introduced in 2001, as a variant similar to the Mercedes-Benz AMG models. It featured a powerful 360 PS (265 kW) version of the V8 engine, equipped with a re-tuned suspension and larger wheels, enriched tires, and an upgraded version of the 5-speed Tiptronic transmission. European-spec models had a 6-speed manual transmission as an option, with quattro being the standard feature. In 2003, the production of first-generation S8 ceased when the D3 platform A8 was introduced. Five years later, Audi launched the new version of S8, powered by a 450 PS (331 kW) V10 spring from the 5.0L V10 used for the Lamborghini Gallardo. Many had argued that since the power output was the same as the W12 engine, why would Audi bother with the development of the V10. Nevertheless, Audi clarified that the V10 S8 achieved improved acceleration and lighter weight, giving it a better weight balance compared to the SWB model, which weighed 20 kg less. The initial reviews of the V10 S8 were profusely positive. Audi claimed the V10 S8 could achieve 0-100 km/h in just 5.1 seconds, making it competitive with Mercedes-Benz S 55 AMG, BMW 760Li, S600 and the A8L W12, although the Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG would still be faster but at a greater cost. The S8 gained much fame when Robert De Niro drove it in the movie Ronin, where its significant speed was well exploited. The film put forth the S8 in a positive light, subsequently leading to its international recognition.
