Audi quattro 1988 posters

Audi quattro

When it first appeared at the Geneva Motor Show in 1980, the Audi quattro brought an entirely new method for delivering power to the passenger car sector – an efficient, low-tension, lightweight all-wheel drive system. This made the quattro concept ideal for fast, sporty cars and mass production from the outset. The first quattro model had 147 kW (200 PS) and remained in the product range as standard model until 1991, being upgraded extensively across its years. In 1984, Audi also produced the Sport quattro with 225 kW (306 PS). The Audi 80 quattro was the first model to include a self-locking center differential to replace the dumb center differential, which had to be manually locked. This differential delivered power between the front and rear axles at a 50:50 ratio, but was capable of transferring 75 percent of the power to either axle when necessary.
