Bentley EXP Speed 8

The Bentley EXP Speed 8 is a LMP race car that was introduced by the British automaker in 2001. It marked the marque's return to racing after a 73-year absence. After competing in the Le Mans series from 2001 to 2003, the Speed 8 claimed the first-place overall win in 2003. It was designed similarly to the Audi R8C, which had prevailed the three years prior.

Technical data

Powered by a 4.0-liter V-8 engine that could produce 600 hp, the 900 kg (1984 lb) Speed 8 was fitted with a 6-speed manual gearbox. This was the most developed version of the car.

Racing history

The Speed 8s had made quite the impression in the 2001, 2002, and 2003 24 Hours of Le Mans races. In its first race, two cars were entered. The other car put up a valiant fight in the rain before it burst into flames, with the other coming in third place. In 2002, the car was up-rated with a 4-liter turbocharged V-8 engine and revised body-work, finishing in fourth. Its last race saw it start from pole, and finish first overall, with no other competitors in its class. This win marked VW Group's fourth straight Le Mans victory.
