Bentley R-Type

The Bentley R Type was the second series of post-war automobile, succeeding the Mark VI. On the exterior, the front of the saloon model was recognizably similar to its predecessor; however, many chassis of R Type models had custom coachwork. The Continental model was introduced for the European auto market, with many cars built by H.J. Mulliner, thus establishing the Bentley Continental namesake. Under the hood, the R Type was powered by an iron-block/aluminum-head straight-six engine, with two SU carburettors providing fuel. The base engine displacement was 4.6L (4566cc/278in³) with a bore size of 92.08mm (3.6in) and stroke of 114.3mm (4.5in). An upgraded version of the Continental had a larger bore of 94.62mm (3.7in) for total displacement of 4.9L (4887cc/298in³). Power was sent to the drivetrain through either a four-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. Production numbers
Bentley R Type: 2320 (303 with coachbuilt bodies)
Bentley R Continental: 207 (plus one prototype)
