The BMW 1 Series is a compact executive car introduced by the German automaker BMW in 2004, and was initially available in a 5-door hatchback (model code E81) and 3-door hatchback (E87) body styles. The coupe (E82) and 2-door convertible (E88) followed later. The 1 Series features a rear-wheel drive chassis, 50:50 weight distribution, longitudinally-mounted engine, aluminum multilink suspension as well as a range of petrol and diesel engines. It replaced the BMW 3 Series Compact as the smallest and least expensive vehicle in BMW's lineup and accounted for nearly 20 percent of the brand's overall sales in 2008. Design work for the 1 Series was done by Christopher Chapman in 2001 and debuted as a 2002 CS1 concept at the 2002 Geneva Motor Show. Upon launch, the 1 Series shared many structural, chassis, powertrain, hardware and electronic elements with the larger E90 3 Series, and was intended to provide a lower price point into the BMW range as the 3 Series became increasingly more premium. In 2012, the 3-door and 5-door hatchbacks were replaced by the F20 and F21 models and the E82 coupe and E88 convertible variants were replaced by the 2 Series F22 and F23 in 2013. The 1 Series coupe (E82) and convertible (E88) made their debut in the United States and Canada for the 2008 model year as the 128i and 135i respectively in June 2007. Elsewhere, the 120i and 125i have both become available in both platforms. The convertible is equipped with a soft-top instead of a folding hardtop.
