BMW 120i UK Version 2005 posters

BMW 120i [UK]

The first-generation BMW 1 Series was created as an entry-level model in 2004 to replace the BMW 3 Series Compact. Its 3-door and 5-door hatchbacks were replaced by the F20 and F21 models in 2012, and the E82 coupe and E88 convertible variants were replaced by the 2 Series F22 and F23 in 2013. This modern compact executive car is available in various body styles – 3-door hatchback (model code E81), 5-door hatchback (E87), coupe (E82) and 2-door convertible (E88). It features a rear-wheel drive chassis, 50:50 weight balance, longitudinally-mounted engine and aluminum multilink suspension, and also offers a variety of petrol and diesel engines. In 2008, the 1 Series accounted for one-fifth of BMW's total sales.

The design of the 1 Series was developed alongside the E90 3 Series. It was conceived by Christopher Chapman in 2001, with the design elements frozen for series production at the end of the same year. A year later, the CS1 concept previewed the 1-Series design elements at the 2002 Geneva Motor Show. It was officially launched globally during the autumn of 2004 and had many common elements with the larger E90 3-Series.

The BMW 1 Series Coupe (E82) was unveiled at the Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung (IAA) in 2007, and went on sale on the 24th November of the same year. The North American region saw the 1 Series Coupe (E82) and Convertible (E88) models being released in June 2007 as the 128i and 135i, while other countries received the 120i and 125i applications across both platforms. Unlike the 3 Series convertible, the 1 Series comes with a soft-top instead of a folding hardtop.
