BMW 1500

At the 1961 Frankfurt International Motor Show (IAA), the anticipation around the star turn of the show, the new BMW mid-range car, was so intense that visitors had to queue up for up to half an hour to get a close-up glimpse. Reports declared that anyone who was in the exhibition area could “feel drawn” towards the car that until then had been a closely guarded internal secret. The two prototypes of what was to become known as the BMW 1500 were on display, both standing in pristine white. Visitors were afforded the chance to sit behind the wheel of one and explore its impressive features which were detailed on a flat panel under the front bumper: 4 cylinders in-line, 75 hp at 5,500 rpm, 5-bearing crankshaft, OHC, front strut suspension, rear semi-trailing arm, front disc brakes, top speed 150 km/h, weight (fully fuelled) approx. 950 kg. Even the striking elegance of the eight-cylinder 3200 CS Coupé revealed alongside the BMW 1500 for the first time couldn’t take away from the sheer magnetic pull of the mid-range car, as it slowly rotated on a platform in front of the enamored crowd. The world premiere of the BMW 1500 was an undisputed hit of the show.
