BMW 3 Series

The BMW 3 Series, based on the E30 automobile platform, was the 1982 through 1991 entry-level luxury car / compact executive car. It succeeded the BMW E21 and was replaced by the BMW E36 in 1992. Even beyond this time period, BMW continued to produce the cabriolet (convertible) E30. The M3 cabriolet was, however, never offered for sale in North America; it could only be obtained in the European market. The E30 3 Series model was the first platform to be equipped with BMW's now iconic Motorsports division 3-series, the BMW M3. The M3 was designed with a widened and heavily modified variation of the 2 door body style, as well as the drivetain from the E30 325i and a widened version of the E30 front suspension. It also saw the introduction of a 5 door estate (marketed as the "touring"), as well as a 2 door saloon, 2 door coach (actually just a 2 door variant of the saloon), and two-door convertible. A Baur cabrio was also available. The 325ix, produced from 1988 to 1992, was equipped with all-wheel drive and could be purchased as either a four-door (sedan) or two-door (coach). Distinctive features for the BMW E30 models produced in 1984-1987 include the use of elongated front/rear chrome bumpers, sometimes referred to as "diving boards". In 1988, the chrome bumpers were shortened by revising the cover/fillers and shortening the shocks. A year later, these were replaced with shorter black plastic bumpers, which could fit onto a 1988 E30 without any modifications. While the chrome bumpers are able to be tucked in by draining the shocks and compressing them, this means, in the event of a collision, the force of impact will be transferred directly to the chassis, rather than being absorbed by the shocks, and thus is more likely to cause serious damage even in low-speed scenarios.
