The BMW E90 features the fifth generation of BMW's 3 Series entry-level luxury car / compact executive car. It replaced the E46 sedan and touring models in 2005 and has quickly become one of BMW Group's best selling automobiles globally with 229,900 vehicles delivered by the end of 2005. Compared to its predecessor, the E90 is larger in every aspect; it is 49 mm longer, 78 mm wider, 9 mm taller and the wheelbase is 35 mm longer. This gives it only slightly less space than a 5 Series from the 1980s.
The BMW E90 is lighter than the E46, thanks to its reliance on aluminum and magnesium in construction and engine. The difference in weight can be seen when comparing the two 320i models; the E90 320i weighing 1435 kg while the E46 model weighs 1470 kg. The E90 325i also makes use of these reduced weight materials, weighing 1505 kg and powered by a 218 hp (160 kW) engine, compared to the E46 325i's 1570 kg weight and 192 hp (141 kW) engine. To further reduce fuel consumption, the E90 features a six-speed manual transmission and replaces the spare wheel with run-flat tires, allowing the car to continue driving for a limited stretch at a moderate speed in the event of a punctuation.
The BMW E90 impressed automotive journalists and received the World Car of the Year award 2006 in April 2006. The car was praised for its balance between performance and practicality, as well as style and seriousness. The jury also commended the new diesel engines and the all wheel drive variants.
