BMW 3.0 CSi

The 3.0 CS and 3.0 CSi were introduced by BMW in 1971, succeeding the 2800CS. The engine was expanded to a displacement of 2,986 cc (182.2 cu in), and delivered 180 horsepower (130 kW) at 6000 RPM with a 9.0:1 compression ratio and twin carburettors in the 3.0 CS, or 200 horsepower (150 kW) at 5500 RPM with a 9.5:1 compression ratio and Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection in the 3.0 CSi. A choice of four speed manual transmission or automatic was available. Max Hoffman, the importer and sole distributor of BMW in the United States from the mid-sixties to 1975, sold the 3.0 CS and 3.0 CSi in the US between the 1970 and 1974 model years. From 1974 onward, the cars had 5 mile per hour protruding bumpers. Performance across the board was excellent, keeping up with many of the models' contemporaries.
