The BMW 5 Series (E39) was made between 1995 and 2003, succeeding the E34. Sales to Germany and the rest of the Western world began in 1995, and a mid-cycle refresh occurred in 2000. The base model was the 520i with 112 kilowatts (150 hp). An M5 variant with a 4.9-litre S62 V8 engine was also available. Both the saloon and Touring estate styles were offered, apart from the M5.
Development of the E39 started in 1989 and took 39 months until production began. The German design patent was granted in 1994. The 5 Series had an evolutionary design, but it was based on the E38 7 Series and featured the same electronic technology. The 528i usually came with a ZF S5-31 manual transmission or an optional four-speed automatic while the 540i had either a Getrag six-speed manual or a five-speed adaptive A5S 560Z automatic. Both models had standard dual front and side airbags, anti-lock brakes, traction control, power steering, and air conditioning.
