BMW 503 Coupe

The BMW 503 is a two door 2+2 seater sports car that gained fame after its debut at the 1955 Frankfurt Motor Show. 413 were produced from 1956 to 1959, including 139 cabriolets.

Design

The car was originally designed by Kurt Bredschneider, though the final shape was given an overhaul by the auto-designer Albrecht von Goertz. Its square cornered look with integrated wings was different from the preliminary flat look; which instead included rounded mudguards to emphasize its connection to the BMW 502.

Technical

The BMW 503 was powered by the 3168 cc light metal V8 engine from the 502 that offered an output of 140 brake horsepower (100 kW). Acceleration from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) could be achieved in 13 seconds, and the top speed was approximately 115 mph (185 km/h). It also had a 4-speed manual transmission, which was initially mounted remotely from the engine and rear axle. A redesign in September 1957 resulted in the transmission being directly attached to the engine, following the same solution as the BMW 507. The gear shifter was also relocated from the steering column to the floor.
