The BMW 5 Series (E39) was produced from 1995 to 2003, replacing the BMW 5 Series (E34) and succeeded by the E60. Sales of this cutting-edge mid-level saloon began in Germany and Western Europe in 1995, and in 1996 rolled out to the rest of the world. A minor update came in 2000. The base model, the 520i, had a power output of 112 kilowatts (150 hp) in pre-2000 models and 126 kilowatts (170 hp) in later models. BMW also produced a version with a 4.9-litre S62 V8 engine - the M5 - that was released in 1998. Both the saloon and estate, called Touring, were available, apart from the M5. Development of the E39 started in 1989 under the name 'Entwicklung 39' and was finished in 1995. The final design by Joji Nagashima was approved in June 1992 and was adopted for production with the arrival of new design chief Chris Bangle. The E39 received a full redesign, inheriting much from the E38 7 Series in terms of body construction and electronics. Initially, the 528i and 540i models were available in the US. The 528i sported a new M52 in-line six engine that was also used in the E36 328i, whilst the 540i had a 4.4-litre M62 V8 engine, also used in the E38 740i. The latter had an upgraded power output of 210 kilowatts (282 hp), as opposed to 141 kilowatts (190 hp) for the the in-line engine. A ZF S5-31 five-speed manual transmission and a Getrag six-speed manual or a five-speed A5S 560Z automatic transmission with adaptive control were the transmission choices for the 528i and 540i, respectively. Standard equipment on both models included dual front and side airbags, anti-lock brakes, traction control, power steering, and air conditioning.
