The 1995–2003 BMW 5 Series (E39) introduced a complete redesign of its predecessor, the BMW 5 Series (E34) .The E39 featured evolutionary styling, a 68 millimetre (2.7 in) extended wheelbase, and an increase in overall length by 55 millimetres (2.2 in). It was offered both as a saloon and an estate (called the Touring) and for the US market came in two variants: the 528i and 540i. The powertrain for the 528i featured a M52 in-line six-cylinder engine with 141 kilowatts (190 hp), and the 540i had a M62 V8 engine, producing 210 kilowatts (282 hp). Standard equipment included dual front and side airbags, anti-lock brakes, traction control, power steering, and air conditioning. An M5 variant, equipped with a 4.9-litre S62 V8 engine, was also introduced in 1998.
