In 2003, BMW re-introduced the 6 Series with coupe and convertible versions that were based on the BMW E63 and E64 platforms, respectively. The 630i was powered by a 3.0 liter (2996 cc) inline-6 with 190 kW (258 hp DIN), while the 645Ci had a 4.4 liter (4398 cc) V8 that produced 245 kW (333 hp DIN) of power. Both models were optionally available with either a 6 speed automatic transmission or a 6 speed SMG transmission. In 2006, the 645Ci was renamed to the 650i due to an increase in engine capacity.
The BMW 6 Series had considerable styling differences from the 5 and 7 Series models; the 6 Series was designed to look like a shark. The controversial "Bangle-butt" rear styling worked better in this model than on other BMW editions. In 2005, an M6 variant of the 6 Series was released, which was equipped with the same 507 bhp engine and transmission found in the BMW M5.
