The BMW 730d is based on the E65/E66 automobile platform which was released in 2002, superseding the BMW E38. Part of the 7-series, it was available in two sizes – short and long wheel base variations. The 730d featured a bold new exterior style courtesy of Chris Bangle, which was initially met with resistance from the E38 community. Over time, the model's design became more beloved and has become an inspiration for the styling of future BMW models. Changes were made with a restyling in 2005, toning down the style.
