BMW 740d

The fourth generation BMW 7 Series full-size luxury sedan (chassis designation E65) was introduced at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 2001 and replaced the previous model (E38). In order to retool the BMW factory in Dingolfing to produce the E65 and other future models, an investment of nearly €500,000,000 was made. The redesign met with criticism for its looks and complexity of the iDrive system. Despite initial teething issues, the E65 7 Series had the best sales figures of the model and continued to do so until it was replaced by the F01 7 Series in late 2008. The development of the E65 began in early 1996, with the production specifications completed in January 1999. The design of the car was patented in November 2000 and production was completed by mid-2001, with the European launch date being 17 November 2001. Other markets such as the US received the car in the northern spring of 2002. Unfortunately, technical issues meant many 2002–2003 models had to be repurchased or, in the US, the warranty was extended from 4-year/50,000-miles (80,000 km) to 6-year/100,000-miles (160,000 km). In the UK, however, the original 3-year/unlimited-miles warranty still applied.
