The BMW E38 model served as the foundation for the 1995 to 2001 7 Series. In early 1988, the development of the third-generation 7 Series with the code name of "Entwicklung 99" was initiated. From 1989 to 1990, the design process was controlled by design director Claus Luthe until Boyke Boyer's concept design was selected and further improved for production in April 1990. In February 1991, the completed design was approved by the board three years prior to the 1994 launch. Design patents of a pre-production prototype were filed in Germany in April 1993, followed by another filing in the United States in October 1993. Production of the model began on July 23, 1993 with pilot production models, followed by US-spec variants on January 13, 1994 and series production starting on February 17, 1994. In May 1994, the 1995 model year E38 BMW 7-Series was revealed. Specifications The E38 models came with either a five-speed automatic or manual transmission.
